A Haiku: I Struggle with Naming Things

ferite

I often wonder if, where, when it is okay to tell my story.

A rabbit, or anything

It’s a strange thing

no one teaches you to be

or calls you human

from birth, as you die

I wonder if it’s alright

then to be a bird,

call yourself Sparrow,

maybe then watching rain clouds

wouldn’t feel lonely.

You see, I was born

to a regretful summer,

or at least Thursday.

I’m sure I cried,

or laughed, then learned to stop

 among other things.

I wanted to be

a rabbit or anything

other than me.

Only one question,

unspoken, fills the seasons.

Will I be human?

Feminist Bodies, Feminist Selves — Nursing Clio

I have never known a person who was 100% content with everything about their body, 100% of the time. The pressure to be physically perfect — thin and athletic, with flawless skin and hair that conforms to the perfect straightness or curl you prefer — obviously falls especially hard on female-bodied people. I think most…

99 word story – Zombie Forks 2 — A Certain Point of View

Luke flailed wildly against the fresh zombie. Weakened by hunger, he didn’t even have a weapon this time. Heart thumping, he backed up, heading for the kitchen – searching for a knife, anything… nothing. No knife block. Cutlery drawer? He grabbed the first metallic item and swung, eyes closed, at the zombie’s head. It speared in through […]

Creamy Thai 10-Vegetable Curry — food to glow

Besides the usual staples of olive oil, pasta, oats and, um, avocados there are a few things I always have in my kitchen: coconut milk powder, onions, limes and a restaurant’s worth of spices. I don’t use these every day of course, but it is comforting to know that they are there, ready to inspire me […]
