Fragile Brevity
Come down now, embrace
the sky-less ground, breathless clouds,
without reason. Cry
the moment light breaks
safety of shadow, recall
nothing without pain.
In this commonplace,
fragile brevity exists
joyful misery.
Why do we bother
naming seasons? Or a self?
Possessiveness breeds
many sorrows called
jealousy, misguided love
that create children.
In kindergarten,
a bird sang daily until
a classmate killed it.
Many winters passed
since then, I wondered often
how cruelty starts.
At what age do clouds
lose magic and we forget
that the sky exists?
Why not celebrate,
soon to be forgotten? Live,
now, embrace what is.
