Through Layers

Where is my voice now?

Buried in the yard, howling

through layers of dirt.

Memories of Dirt

The woods became cars.

I no longer hear the birds

outside my window.

Should I smile more now

or less because of progress?

Summer burns my feet

as I walk barefoot

on asphalt, trying to live

memories of dirt.

Poetry: Black Drops

Black drops

Cold black drops, rain now,

cry now, then sleep, dream not, cold

black drops, cold black drops.

A Haiku: I Struggle with Naming Things

ferite

I often wonder if, where, when it is okay to tell my story.

A rabbit, or anything

It’s a strange thing

no one teaches you to be

or calls you human

from birth, as you die

I wonder if it’s alright

then to be a bird,

call yourself Sparrow,

maybe then watching rain clouds

wouldn’t feel lonely.

You see, I was born

to a regretful summer,

or at least Thursday.

I’m sure I cried,

or laughed, then learned to stop

 among other things.

I wanted to be

a rabbit or anything

other than me.

Only one question,

unspoken, fills the seasons.

Will I be human?

RonovanWrites #Weekly #Haiku #Poetry Prompt #Challenge #104 Dazzle&Sky

Dream of nightfall

“Why bother to rise?”

I asked the sun, still smiling,

drenched by summer’s heat.

I wander mind-fields,

pick thought-petals, have lunch, sleep

under the old oak

tree without worry,

with the sky protecting me,

I dream of nightfall.

Fragile Brevity: RonovanWrites #Weekly #Haiku #Poetry Prompt #Challenge #102 Birth & Cheer

25887465135_12bb12a9a0_k

Fragile Brevity

Come down now, embrace

the sky-less ground, breathless clouds,

without reason. Cry

the moment light breaks

safety of shadow, recall

nothing without pain.

In this commonplace,

fragile brevity exists

joyful misery.

Why do we bother

naming seasons? Or a self?

Possessiveness breeds

many sorrows called

jealousy, misguided love

that create children.

In kindergarten,

a bird sang daily until

a classmate killed it.

Many winters passed

since then, I wondered often

how cruelty starts.

At what age do clouds

lose magic and we forget

that the sky exists?

Why not celebrate,

soon to be forgotten? Live,

now, embrace what is.

The horse looked back once

The tree barks remain

undamaged–where did they go,

the deer by my house?
