Memories of An Old Tree (in 7 haiku)

Are you hollow now,

brittled by years, wondering

why you must stand still?

Once, from my window,

you sparkled with the night sky.

Summer hurricane.

 —

The roof  was debris.

I watched it sail far away,

but so close to you.

We were mesmerized,

the stupidity of youth,

you were asunder.

In autumn I read

The Giving Tree–did you know

that I would miss you?

If I live to see

my ninetieth winter, tears

for you will still shed.

Spring is a warning

that we live and grow, facing

our bitter end.
